Sources: Michigan hires ex-Giants DC Wink Martindale

Michigan plans to hire former New York Giants Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has been named defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal is still in the final stages, but it is not expected to face any hiring hurdles, sources said.

The Giants and defensive coordinator Martindale parted ways in January. The Giants' defense under Martindale had its ups and downs last season. They ranked 27th overall, but ranked first in the NFL in turnovers scored and were by far the team's best unit. According to ESPN Analytics, New York's defense ranked 17th overall. New York's offense ranked 30th and its special teams ranked 25th in a disappointing six-win season following a playoff season.

Martindale will replace Michigan DC's Jesse Minter, who left the program on Tuesday after two years to serve as Los Angeles Chargers DC and reunion with coach Jim Harbaugh. Minter helped Michigan to its first national title in 26 seasons as well as two Big Ten championships and CFP appearances.

Both Minter and former Michigan DC Mike Macdonald ran a version of Martindale's defense using similar concepts and terminology. Therefore, the transition may not be quite as dramatic for the players as if another NFL coach were to take over.
